Here it is … already March ( already..ugh). From most things I’ve seen, a majority of folks have hit the New Year hard with resolutions.
I’m going to get in shape by exercising more.
I’m going to get my finances under control this year.
This is going to be the year that I stop pleasing everyone else and make myself the priority.
Me, on the other hand, have not made one single resolution … and it’s already March. It doesn’t seem fair to put all that un-do stress on myself when I know without a doubt that by the end of the month I will have let myself down and pushed those resolutions to the bottom of my priority list.
You see … in my experience, very few people actually stick to their resolutions made in the heat of the very first sparkly moments of a new year. That in turn, leaves more people depressed, feeling like they have failed, and for some… throw the mojo of the whole year off. It happens all the time.
So this year, I have chosen to pick myself out a “word of the year’ to inspire me or re-motivate me when I need it.
I’ve made a list and tossed out multiple candidates for this very important job. You see… not just any word can be my “word of the year”. It has to be a very strong and confident word. It has to have the ability to motivate and inspire. The word can’t be a lack luster everyday word.
A strong contender was CALM. I do need calmness in my stressful life. But, I don’t feel like CALM will inspire the things I want to accomplish in 2017. CALM was scratched from the list.
Then there was APPRECIATE. I do have a lot in my life to APPRECIATE (a wonderful husband, 3 healthy kids, and 2 silly dogs …. Amongst other things) and often times I don’t APPRECIATE them as I should. I could use a reminder to be more aware of that but APPRECIATE still wasn’t my word.
I pondered over CREATE, FOCUS, DREAM, HOPE, PERSIST …. Hold on a second … I was on to something with that.
PERSIST hit a spot that none of the other words had. The goals I have for this year would definitely require me to PERSIST in my endeavors – to continue firmly or obstinately in an opinion or a course of action in spite of difficulty, opposition, or failure. I want to be able to accomplish what no one thinks I can and do things that will require me to give more of myself than I ever have. Definitely sounds like a call to PERSIST right?
But PERSIST wasn’t “pretty” enough. I wanted a more girly word. (In a whole lot of ways I definitely don’t come across as a princess but deep down I’m really all frilly and pink and girly. ) So what would be a more girly version of PERSIST …. AHA… I had it!! My very own …very first…. “word of the year” had spoken to me.
PERSISTENCE!!! Now isn’t that much prettier and girly?
So… from this day forward as I drudge through 2017 with my goals in my line of sight …. I will turn to PERSISTENCE for my motivation and inspiration. On the days when I think it is totally impossible or out of my reach to achieve the unachievable ….there will be PERSISTENCE. When I’m tired and failing miserably, my old buddy PERSISTENCE will give me the pep talk I need and we will together make all things happen.
If you are a slave to new years resolutions that are never achieved, maybe you should think about making the switch to a “word of the year”. It may be the change you need to actually achieve greater things in 2017.
Do you make resolutions every New Years? If you do, how does that work out for you? Do you desert them a month later or are you a rare bird that actually sticks with it?
Has anyone else ever had a “word of the year”? What are some of the words that have inspired you?
I’m looking forward to hearing from you all.
